    The body of a woman can reserve a number of surprises as she approaches her menstrual cycle. And among them is an increase in flatulence sometimes smelly. Various reasons can explain this unpleasant but normal process. 


    One might think that abdominal cramps, sore breasts, water retention, restless sleep, and craving for irresistible sugar would be sufficient premenstrual torture for women. But no, there are also intestinal gases. According to a 2014 study by researchers at the University of Manitoba in Canada, cited by Hello Giggles, 73% of women surveyed had at least one gastrointestinal symptom before or during their period.

    Although abdominal pain and diarrhea are quite common, flatulence is also involved. Different theories can explain this biological reaction. Above all, it is important to remember that gases are a healthy, natural and normal product of digestion. They do not mean that the body works badly, even if they smell bad. The smell is also the result of bacterial fermentation in the colon. It is often linked to a high-fiber diet that includes foods, including vegetables, containing sulfur.

    Hormones and bloating

    As ovulation approaches, on the 13th or 14th day of the menstrual cycle, the levels of progesterone hormone start to increase in preparation for a possible pregnancy. It is this hormone that causes morning sickness and constipation when a woman is pregnant. But if the egg is not fertilized, the progesterone level drops, and the body relaxes. Among other things, the compounds called prostaglandins are released at the time of menstruation. They are responsible for menstrual cramps and move the colon, causing bloating, farts, and sometimes diarrhea.

    If premenstrual flatulence really bother you, try eating whole, unprocessed foods in the days before the cycle starts. Foods of plant origin are usually better digested. Just avoid beans and cauliflowers, or any other food that is difficult to digest. Do not hesitate to talk to your doctor if you suspect a food intolerance or serious disorder.
